Orton Museum at Homecoming

Construction of Ohio Stadium was completed in 1922. At the time, it was touted as the largest poured concrete building in the world. However, some of the foundation and facing stone was limestone quarried from the Marble Cliff Quarry, along the banks of the Scioto River in Columbus. The rock was a combination of Columbus Limestone and the overlying unit, the Delaware Limestone. Both are Devonian in age (~390 million years old) and richly fossiliferous.

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, 1:15-3:15 pm, Ohio State's College of Arts & Sciences will celebrate its Homecoming Tailgate Impact Showcase on the Oval before the football Buckeyes take on Maryland. The Orton Museum will be there with a special interactive exhibition - Fossils of Ohio Stadium.

We have an amazing set of specimens for visitors to see and touch. These are the same fossils as you can find, in slices of rock, in the facing stones of Ohio Stadium (only they are much easier to visualize in the museum's exhibit). We even have a special treat- fossiliferous limestone that was cut for use in the stadium.

Come join us at the Homecoming Tailgate Impact Showcase!

When and where: Saturday, October 10, 2026, 1:15-3:15 pm, on the Oval.
